Tim Groen (RYT 500) is an Amsterdam-born Hatha Yoga teacher living in New York City. He first started practicing in the late 1990’s in NYC. After he was trained in India as a classical Hatha Yoga teacher, he went on to become certified to teach Intermediate (Level II) and Advanced Yoga. His schooling in the US took place at Integral Yoga Institute, one of the world’s oldest and most respected Yoga schools, founded in 1966 by Swami Satchidananda. He is also trained to instruct pranayama and Raja Yoga; the branch of Yoga that calms the mind through the practice of ethics and meditation. Tim teaches regularly scheduled classes, private sessions and workshops, and has led public meditations in NYC’s Highline park. In his classes and workshops, expect to learn traditional yoga techniques rooted in ancient yoga philosophy, but taught in a current and applicable way.
Hatha Yoga: A Balanced Practice
Saturday 23th and Saturday 30th December
1:30 – 3:30 pm
Tim Groen (RYT 500) leads you through a ninety-minute journey of asana and relaxation, of exertion and surrendering. Moving through standing postures, backbends, forward bends, inversions, twists, and more, your body will be deeply stretched as the mind starts to relax. Tim is a classically trained teacher who combines Hatha Flow with postures that are held longer for a deeper experience. With attention for each student, he enjoys presenting practices and variations that are new and challenging. The last half hour is devoted to the profound practices of deep relaxation, pranayama, and meditation.
Slow, Still and Deep, Ancient Yoga Wisdom on the Mat
Wednesday 27th of December
1:00 – 3:00 pm
Enjoy a beautiful and detailed Hatha Yoga class, and learn how to combine your Yoga practice with the wisdom of the 5000-year old Yoga Sutras, one of the oldest Yoga scriptures. In very practical ways we’ll explore some key philosophical principles that will help you deepen your practice.
Learn how to slow down to explore what your body-mind is feeling, keeping your practice interesting and challenging. For example, we will practice the Yamas and Niyamas by applying ‘contentment’ and ‘harmlessness,’ and ease into postures with Pratipaksha Bhavana, letting go of any hindering thoughts of self-judgement. All of these techniques were handed down to us thousands of years ago by the Yoga sage Patanjali, and have been applied by Yogis ever since. This workshop class concludes with Yoga Nidra, or deep relaxation, and a mantra meditation.
Yoga and Pranayama, Deepen Your Practice
Thursday 28th of December
1:00 – 3:00 pm
Pranayama is the dosing, timing and regulating of the breath, in order to control the flow of Prana, or life force, in your system.
During an all-level, deep Hatha Yoga class, Tim Groen will guide you through the fundamentals of Pranayama – Yogic breathing. The practice of asanas removes the obstacles to the flow of prana and the practice of pranayama regulates that flow; that is why the two have been practiced together for many thousands of years. The basic pranayama techniques ujjayi, dirgha svasam, kapalabhati, and nadi suddhi, along with some others, are demonstrated, explained and practiced in detail. You’ll find the practices comfortable and joyful, and will learn to use the prana for calming, deepening, and strengthening.
“It is Prana that moves the mind. Control of Prana means control of the mind. If you can control the external breath, you can easily control the inner vital force, prana.” Swami Sivananda
This workshop/class concludes with Yoga Nidra, or deep relaxation, and a breath-centered meditation.
